Scenario 1: Gertrude
Gertrude is an elderly guinea pig breeder living in California. Guinea pigs make a distinct rumbling noise when they are upset or frightened as an instinctual way of warning the herd of danger. They happen to hate it when the ground shakes and their footing becomes unstable. Gertrude notices that her prize show guinea pigs are getting so upset lately that they are not eating, losing their fur, and making their rumbling noise quite often. Gertrude knows this must mean that the ground is shaking and decides to investigate.
She finds GEE after some fancy Google work and begins to explore the seismic activity in her area. She finds that earthquakes have, in fact, been occurring, thus saving herself the trouble of writing an angry letter to her local councilman about those vexatious garbage trucks.
Scenario 2: Professor Beauvais
Professor Beauvais has recently been appointed to a position teaching Geology 101 at his local university. The first chapter he will be lecturing on covers the general principles of seismology. This is a lesson he is quite excited about teaching and plans to supplement the textbook material with a lovely Power Point presentation made by his wife including many photos of her sister's house, which was slightly damaged by an earthquake in 1984. The Professor excitedly shows this presentation to his teaching assistant, who promptly falls asleep and begins snoring loudly. Professor Beauvais, embarrassed, knocks a large text book on the floor to wake the T.A.
The T.A., though apologetic, cannot disguise the fact that he found the Professor's presentation to be quite boring. He suggests that the Professor use GEE to demonstrate seismic principles to his class. Professor Beauvais thinks this is a marvelous idea and tucks his wife's Power Point presentation away in a rarely used folder on his computer.
Scenario 3: Dr. Kelley
Dr. Kelley is a seismologist studying earthquakes and such. She has discovered GEE through a colleague and uses it to customize the way she looks at seismic data so that she can make posters and write papers about earthquakes and such. This is entirely serious and no humor will be employed.
